Sketchbook No.6: Metamorphosis or Hybrid

Essential Question(s):

1. How does the choice of medium affect a work of art?

2. What impact can the Elements of Art, VALUE + TEXTURE, create when used together?

3. How are the Principles of Design, CONTRAST + RHYTHM or CONTRAST + UNITY,  used to strengthen the overall composition?

 Mastery Objective(s): The student will…

1. demonstrate his/her understanding of the Elements of Art, value + texture, and Principles of Design, contrast + rhythm/contrast + unity, by successfully creating a uniquely, innovative metamorphosis or hybrid.


Directions:

You have a choice for this sketchbook assignment between either
1. METAMORPHOSIS or 2. a HYBRID!

REQUIREMENTS:

  1. BE ORIGINAL! You must show your own thinking – start by brainstorming with a written list of ideas and then start @ LEAST 4 THUMBNAIL sketches of your ideas! DO NOT COPY anything from the internet!
  2. COMPOSITION:
    • Metamorphosis-
      • 2 page-spread *you can have more negative space and spread out the transformations/transitions
      • if you have a sketchbook smaller than 9″x12″, you are required to fill the 2 page-spread to about 85%
      • Hybrid-
        • 1 page-spread *must use 85% of your paper
        • if you have a sketchbook smaller than 9″x12″, you are required to complete a 2 page spread
  3. MEDIUM(s): optional except see note on graphite
    • PEN & INK with Watercolor or Colored Pencil
    • WATERCOLOR
    • COLOR PENCIL
    • BLENDING MARKER
    • PAINT
    • GRAPHITE: pencil + ebony pencil ***must show a developed drawing when using pencil (shading techniques, etc. NO SMUDGING)
  4. ELEMENTS of ART:
    • Metamorphosis & Hybrid-
      • Show VALUE + TEXTURE
  5. PRINCIPLES of DESIGN:
    • Metamorphosis-
      • Show CONTRAST + RHYTHM
    • Hybrid-
      • Show CONTRAST + UNITY

      • Metamorphosis-
        • must have at least 4 transformations/transitions
      • Hybrid-
        • must have more than 2 being combined

 Sketchbook should show at least 4-5 hours of effort

Start with an object and transform it into something else, showing the phases in the metamorphosis!


CHOICE 2:

hy·brid

/hīˌbrid/
1.the offspring of two plants or animals of different species or varieties, such as a mule (a hybrid of a donkey and a horse).
2.a thing made by combining two different elements; a mixture.
Mix 2 animals together to create a new species!

 HYBRID: MAN-MADE vs. NATURE

HYBRID: OBJECT +OBJECT

HYBRID: HUMAN + ANIMAL
